§ How-To
Choosing Trimmer Line Gauge: 0.065" vs 0.080" vs 0.095"
Match line diameter to your trimmer's power and your yard so it cuts clean and feeds right.

Line gauge is the single biggest factor in how a trimmer cuts — and whether the line feeds at all.
0.065” — light grass
The default for small cordless and electric trimmers. Cuts soft grass and edges cleanly, feeds easily, easy on the motor. Too light for weeds and brush.
0.080” — general purpose
The sweet spot for most homeowners with a 20V–40V trimmer. Handles thicker grass and light weeds without bogging a mid-power motor.
0.095” and up — weeds & brush
For 40V+/gas trimmers and heavy growth. Hits hard and lasts, but a weak motor will struggle and the line won’t feed on a small head.
The rule
Never go above the gauge your head is rated for — it jams the eyelet and stresses the motor. When in doubt, match the OEM line that came with the trimmer.
Line shape
Round is cheapest; twisted and serrated cut cleaner and quieter. See our line-shape guide in the Journal.
