Trimmer Head Types: Auto-Feed vs Bump vs Fixed-Line

Which feed system suits you — and how to upgrade a worn head to a universal one.

Trimmer Head Types: Auto-Feed vs Bump vs Fixed-Line

Three feed systems cover almost every trimmer.

Auto-feed

The head pays out line automatically as it wears. Easiest to use, but the mechanism is the most failure-prone and spools are model-specific.

Bump-feed

Tap the head on the ground to release more line. Simple, durable, and forgiving of heavier line — the choice for most gas trimmers.

Fixed-line (pivoting)

You load pre-cut strips that pivot. No winding ever, very tough, great near fences and beds — but you carry pre-cut line.

Upgrading

If your OEM head is cracked or the auto-feed quit, a universal bump head or pivoting head fits most straight- and curved-shaft trimmers with the included adapters. It’s often cheaper than a brand-specific replacement and runs heavier line.
