Why Your Spool Keeps Jamming

Five root causes of a spool that welds, tangles, or stops feeding — and how to prevent them.

Why Your Spool Keeps Jamming

Jamming isn’t bad luck — it’s usually one of these.

Heat welding

Loose coils melt together. Wind tight and flat, and don’t run the line down to nothing.

Wrong gauge

Too-thick line binds in the eyelet every time. Match the rating.

Cross-winding

Overlapping layers snag. Even rows in the arrow direction only.

Cheap brittle line

Old or low-grade nylon snaps and tangles. Store line out of sunlight; UV makes it brittle.

Worn head

A grooved eyelet or weak feed spring will fight you no matter how perfectly you wind. At that point, replace the head.

If you’ve ruled all five out and it still jams, the spool footprint may be a poor match for your head — verify the part number.
